About Pixar's RenderMan

What it is, and why teams use it.

What Pixar's RenderMan is

The renderer behind Toy Story, Avatar, and 500+ major films. Now available exclusively in ANZ through Storm FX. Pixar's RenderMan is the most celebrated rendering technology in cinema history, the software that powered the world's first fully computer-animated feature film (Toy Story, 1995) and has since appeared in over 500 major Hollywood productions.

Honoured with multiple Academy Scientific and Technical Awards and an IEEE Milestone Award, RenderMan has continuously evolved to remain the reference standard for visual effects rendering. The latest release introduces RenderMan XPU, a breakthrough hybrid CPU+GPU architecture that simultaneously harnesses all available compute resources, dramatically accelerating both look development and final frame rendering.

Key features

What Pixar's RenderMan brings.

XPU Hybrid CPU+GPU Rendering

RenderMan 27's revolutionary XPU architecture dynamically distributes rendering tasks across CPU and GPU simultaneously. Not a choice between them, both at once. That delivers faster look development and final frames without compromising image quality.

Production Path Tracing

Full Monte Carlo path tracing calculates every bounce of light, every shadow and every reflection with real physics. It is the same technology used in Pixar's own feature films.

AI Denoiser

Developed collaboratively by Disney Research, ILM, and Pixar, the ML Denoiser uses production data to remove noise while preserving intricate detail. Industry veterans have been known to call it 'magic'.

MaterialX Lama

ILM's advanced material layering system ships with RenderMan, so artists can mix and match entire material networks modularly. It is the same system used on productions like Andor and Predator: Badlands.

Tractor Network Rendering

Included with every RenderMan licence, Tractor is a modern render queue management system already deployed at major VFX studios, enabling efficient distribution of rendering tasks across large compute clusters.

Stylized Looks Toolset

Go beyond photorealism. RenderMan's Stylized Looks system enables non-destructive cartoon, anime, illustration and sketch rendering styles, using the same familiar lighting and shading workflow.

Use cases

How it plays out in practice.

Pixar Animation Studios

RenderMan is Pixar's own rendering engine, used on every feature film the studio has produced. Toy Story (1995), Inside Out 2, Elemental and everything since.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)

ILM uses RenderMan across major VFX productions including Andor, Predator: Badlands, and numerous Marvel productions, collaborating directly with the RenderMan team to advance MaterialX Lama shading capabilities.

Framestore, MPC, Animal Logic

Leading VFX houses globally deploy RenderMan in production pipelines for feature films and episodic series, relying on its scalability across massive render farms and its consistent, predictable output.
